Revived Legend: The Last Radar Blue Typhoon

Updated: Oct 27

GMC Typhoons were no ordinary SUVs. Built from 1992 to 1993, these turbocharged 4.3L V6, all-wheel-drive beasts were ahead of their time—blending muscle car aggression with utility. Only 4,697 were ever made.

Among them? A unicorn.

Radar Blue was one of the rarest colorways released during the Typhoon’s short run. Just one was produced in 1992. Just one in 1993. And the ’93? It’s no longer running. That leaves this one—the last known Radar Blue Typhoon in existence.

For 30 years, it sat dormant. Hidden under boxes, newspapers, and time itself. The paint? OEM. The condition? Neglected. The pressure? Immense.

I had the honor of prepping, polishing, and detailing this survivor for its debut at the Carlisle Truck Nationals in Pennsylvania. And let me tell you—this wasn’t just a detail. It was a resurrection.

GMC Typhoons were 4.3L v6 turbocharged, all-wheel drive SUVs produced from 1992 to 1993. Only 4,697 were EVER MADE!

Radar Blue was (one of many) rare color combinations released for 1992 and 1993 with only 1 produced for each year. The '93 is no longer running, so this is the ONLY one left in this colorway.

This gorgeous chameleon-painted Typhoon has sat under boxes and newspapers for the last 30 YEARS!

Thirty years of wear on OEM paint is the kind of challenge that keeps detailers up at night. Before I touched a pad, I measured every body panel with a coating thickness gauge. Thankfully, there was enough material left to work with. So I got to work.

After a thorough strip wash, iron removal, clay bar treatment, and hand dry, I moved into correction. First, a cutting compound with a heavy pad to remove oxidation and deep defects. Then a polishing compound to refine the finish. Finally, I sealed it all in with a ceramic wax designed to protect and preserve what’s left of this rare factory paint.

Nine hours later, the transformation was complete.

This Typhoon was proudly displayed at Carlisle, featured in GM EFI Magazine, and captured on video gleaming in the sun. You can see it for yourself right here.

From buried to brilliant—this Typhoon now gleams like it just rolled off the line. It was proudly displayed at Carlisle, featured in GM EFI Magazine, and captured on video basking in the sun.

I’m incredibly grateful to have played a role in preserving this piece of automotive history. It’s not just one of the coolest jobs I’ve done—it’s a reminder of why I do this in the first place.

Because sometimes, detailing isn’t just about restoring a finish.. It’s about honoring a legacy.
